The DARPA Urban Challenge was a race with autonomous cars through an urban setting. Cars had to obey the rules of the road including stopping at stop signs, using their turn signals, among many other things that one should do while driving.
I was part of Team Jefferson, which competed with a slightly modified Scion XB. Our team comprised of two software people (of which I was one), a mechanic, a project manager, and a small handful of electrical students from UVa. The team did fairly well despite our limited numbers. We made it to the semi-finals and placed in the top 35 teams world wide. The Discovery Channel followed 10 teams throughout the challenge, of which we were one of the teams.
